The Ports Portable

A cultural Travel Guide to the Port Cities of Antwerp, Hamburg and Rotterdam.

Eric Van Hooydonk and Patrick Verhoeven write the first cultural travel guide to the leading port cities of Europe.

The Antwerp publishing house Pandora, which is led by former shipping executive André Bollen, Hamburg Port Authority and Hamburg Marketing GmbH will present on January 19, 2007 the first in a series of cultural travel guides which aim at shedding new light on European port cities.

In the Hamburg part in chapter "HARBURG: CITADEL PORT AND INDUSTRIAL CITY" the authors are describing the past of Harburg and and have also a view on the efforts which were done during the last years. The Harburg Inner Port with the  Channel Hamburg (this place is part of the VISP Project) is developing more and more into an attracive and lively district, traditional and new uses, old and modern architecture are not at odds, but rather make for an appealing contrast.

The Ports Portable is a new series of cultural travel guides to the leading port cities of Europe. The first volume covers Antwerp, Hamburg and Rotterdam, the largest ports of the continent. They do not only have a tremendously rich past, but also continue to be the driving forces behind Europe’s participation in globalisation processes. Moreover, they are attractive tourist destinations, boasting top quality port and shipping-related heritage, architecture, art collections and museums, as well as endless opportunities for breathtaking port visits. For each of the three cities, this guide provides historical background, a detailed description of old and new harbour quarters, dozens of port maps and scores of illustrations (click on the banner above to see some samples), and, last but not least, a practical guide to port pubs, restaurants, hotels, places of interest, shopping and events.

The Ports Portable counts 480 pages and was written by Eric Van Hooydonk and Patrick Verhoeven. Both authors are professionally active in the port sector, Eric Van Hooydonk as professor of maritime law at the Antwerp University and lawyer, Patrick Verhoeven as Secretary General of the European Sea Ports Organisation.

The authors took the initiative for this new series from their firm belief that public support for seaports can significantly be increased if the tourist and cultural potential of port cities is better known and accessible to the general public.

The first volume in the series was therefore supported by the port authorities of Antwerp, Hamburg and Rotterdam as well as by numerous private companies and institutions in the three ports. Principal sponsors were the Antwerp port employers’ association CEPA and Alfaport Antwerpen, the federation of port-related and logistic companies in the port of Antwerp.

The Ports Portable was presented in Antwerp on January 9 in  Rotterdam on 15 January and will be launched in Hamburg on 19 January. It will then be available from quality booksellers in Belgium, Germany, Holland and other countries. Copies can also be ordered directly from the publisher.

Ordering information and other details, including sample pages, can be found on The Ports Portable website . For the VISP Project Partners we will get some books - if you are interested please mail to Tina Schmidt-Nausch at TuTech Innovation GmbH.
