European Fair on "Education for Sustainable Development" in Hamburg

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

From September 13th to 15th, the second fair on "Education for Sustainable Development in Europe" will take place in Hamburg. The symposium is in the context of the UN-decade (2005-2014) that publicly centres on education for sustainable development.

The fair is organised by TuTech Innovation GmbH in co-operation with regional, national and international organisations, among them the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Hamburg Office for Education and Sports oversees the fair. In its course, the Hamburg Institute for Teacher Education and School Development of the Office for Education and Sports will award its yearly distinctions for “Environmental Schools in Europe/International Agenda 21-Schools" in Hamburg.

The fair takes place in the AZB Ausbildungszentrum Bau in Hamburg GmbH, Schwarzer Weg 3, 22309 Hamburg.

Five panels will look at an education for sustainable development from the perspective of the media, the UN strategy, of schools and universities as well as out-of-school education. In their lectures, scholars from all over Europe and Japan will cover individual issues of education for sustainable development. In the accompanying exhibition, European and regional organisations active in education for sustainable development will present their projects.

Main focus will be the question of how the issue of sustainability is realised in press coverage, school education and university seminars. "In the course of the last years, numerous improvements have been made in education programmes for sustainable development", says Professor Walter Leal, head of the Life Sciences Department of TuTech Innovation GmbH. "However, there are significant differences between individual European countries. That is why we want to encourage more intensive endeavours on the national and regional level", he explains the approach of this fair that he co-organises as the chairman of its scientific advisory council.
