Contest - DIFA Award 2006

Contest DIFA-AWARD 2006 - "Quality of life in urban quarters"
The deadline is extended till 17th of december 2005 (date of postmark)

Is the "quarter" a possible European response to the need to modernise, enhance and regenerate run-down, depopulated urban districts? The DIFA-AWARD 2006 offers a forum for comparison at European level, focusing on publicly accessible places and quarter management.
As local VISP-Partners of TuTech the channel hamburg e.V. and the Bezirksamt Hamburg harburg are participating in the Contest - they have already sent the Entry Form to the contest agency!!! In their focus ist the quarter "Harburger Binnenhafen - channel hamburg".

Will more VISP-Partners participate ?? - we think it is a very good opportunity for our VISP-Project!! The deadline was extended until December 17. The First step is to fill out a Entry Form - and this is not too much work!!

DIFA-PRESS INFO:
The DIFA-AWARD was launched in 2001 by DIFA Deutsche Immobilien Fonds AG with the title "City of the future. Future of the city." The aim was to involve policy-makers, those actively involved in urban development and those affected by it in a wide-ranging dialogue on the future of the city. As part of this exercise, the DIFA-AWARD jury identified urban quarters as the smallest functional organic element in European cities and made them the main focus of the competition. Quarters are unrivalled in terms of providing a stimulating location that supports various uses, and one which offers long-term synergy benefits for the surrounding urban environment. For this reason, more and more towns and cities are focusing on the integrative effect of such districts when regenerating run-down areas. Through modernisation, enhancement and economic revitalisation, projects of this type have become a symbol of sustainable urban development.
The 2004 DIFA-AWARD was the first time a town planning competition has been dedicated to exploring the significance of quarters within the context of European urban development. More than 100 entries from 62 cities and 15 European countries were submitted to this real estate competition, which has quickly established itself as a recognised international forum for debate on the future of the city.

DIFA-ANNOUNCEMENT - DIFA-AWARD 2006: ready for take-off.
The city is stirring. Whereas 20th century urban development still mirrored the ideological principle of functional separation, i.e. of keeping living and working environments apart, present-day attitudes return to the key features of historic cities: public spaces, density and heterogeneity.

Meanwhile, one basic entity - small, clearly defined and adaptable - is coming more and more into focus: the inner-city quarter. As an identifiable and identity forming module, it sparks a ray of hope for the future of the city.We are experiencing a recollection of the context of urbanity and the rediscovery of a bustling, stimulating environment, the refurbishment and renewal of the city.

Whether we are dealing with guiding principles or procedural strategies in the development of inner-city
quarters - there is no such thing as a simple recipe. However, there are plenty of good examples that are worth following. Everyone must decide for himself which course of action to take, but the experience from earlier decades and the lessons learned by other cities are there for support. A pan-European contest like the DIFA-AWARD can provide the stimulus for an animated discourse, build bridges and motivate, make successful urban development available to a wider public and allow others to join in.
We sincerely hope that you decide to enter one of your quarters for the DIFA-AWARD 2006 to join in the quest for "quality of life in urban quarters". Your solution for the regeneration or creation of a livable innercity quarter can set an example and inspire other cities - and show how people will live in cities in future. Enter for the DIFA-AWARD. Your contribution is important!
