Drammen and Honningsvåg (near the North Cape) competed for the title of "Norway's Summer City 2006" in an sms referendum held by the traditional summer radio programme in the Norwegian national broadcasting company (NRK).
Drammen has gradually, but quite fast, been transforming from ugly duckling to a swan. The inhabitants showed their appreciation of this by giving their vote to Drammen in the sms referendum in the NRK summer competition.
Drammen has had a log, sunny and hot summer this year. The warmest in a hundred years, they say! People have spent lazy days in leisure boats on the river or swimming from the beaches. In the parks on the river banks, they have enjoyed a meal or a drink in the outdoor restaurants along the river and market places, and bought vegetables, garden flowers and the sweetest strawberries ever from the stalls.
Their enthusiasm resulted in a number of sms-es exceeded only by the Honningsvåg supporters. Mayor of Drammen, Tore Opdal Hansen is very pleased and proud of the result. "This is good for the citizens' self esteem as well as the ongoing marketing of the city".
